After our time in Dahab, we stopped in Ras El Barr on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. This is an old resort town and is mentioned in the novels of the great Egyptian novelist Nahib Mahfouz. It is enjoying a major building boom currently, with the infrastructure already constructed for a doubling of the footprint of the city.
Ras El Barr sits at the spot where the East Branch of the Nile flows into the sea and the lighthouse and fishing fleet are landmarks of the place. It is a holiday town, quiet in fall, winter and spring, but loud and bustling once school lets out and the happy people of the old city of Damietta come for the summer, waking at mid-day and roaming the streets and lounging in the cafes far into the night.
