In 2008 we traveled from Cairo to Dahab, driving across the Sinai Peninsula to the resort town on the Gulf of Aqaba. Some say  Dahab is not Egypt, and I know what they mean. They mean it is not like Cairo or the Delta or Upper Egypt. They also mean that 30 years ago Dahab was not a world-class travel destination and so it doesn't fit with the Nile Valley Egypt with its 6000+ year continuous history. However, I disagree with them. Dahab is a special part of Egypt in 2008.

The people who have created this wonderful 21stC place are Egyptians. They may not be typical Egyptians, but they did come here from Cairo (mostly) and The Delta and Upper Egypt. They have done an extraordinary thing here on the rocky coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. And they are very proud of their new resort in Sinai. These men were very kind to us at every turn and we thank them. I recommend that Egyptians reconsider their view of Dahab as 'not-Egypt' because they deserve to claim it as their own and to be proud of Dahab.

There is no doubt in my mind these men will continue to create this place and that the future of Dahab is golden.
