Hawksbill Turtles - Qatar - 2

18 June 2010

The Release

Since our first visit here I have found out more about the MOE Turtle program. The MOE staff not only tag the turtles but also collect the turtle eggs and move them to a secure habitat located on this beach. This site is monitered very carefully. Each relocated egg nest is tagged as to the date of laying and to how many eggs there are in each nest. This tells them when the eggs are ready for hatching.

We were again at Fuwait beach in hopes of seeing some baby turtles being released. In the late afternoon we saw some activity by the MOE 's trailer and then saw the baby turtles in the sand. To our amazment we watched as they scrambled toward the sea and eventualy into the ocean. I went into the sea shortly after this release and had a beautiful encounter with a couple of these baby turtles as they were experiencing swimming for the very first time. It is an astonding thing to see a baby turtle do a deep dive for the first time.
