As a quick and easy get-away weekend (after four straight months in Qatar) David went to Oman. Muscat is only one hour by air west of Doha - Qatar Airways makes it very easy. Oman is a sizable country and David looked around the area around Muscat including the village of the Sultan's palace (which, strictly speaking, is Muscat), Ruwi and Mutthrah.
The primary sites were: The Grand Mosque (new and near the airport), a fabulous architectural feat well worth a visit
Port Sultan Qaboos (where David stayed in the Marina Hotel) where the Sultan's monster yacht is moored and the corniche is new and well constructed - the village itself is small and tucked into the mountains with old Portuguese forts surrounding the bay
The Oman Dive Center - in a by of it's own just south of the Sultan's Palace, the center is a perfect beach for the day with snorkeling and scuba excursions and a full service restaurant and bar - the tent bar on the beach serves sheeshah and spirits after 6pm.
