Mahe Island - so many beaches, so little time... Our island home during our holiday was the village of Beau Vallon on Mahe Island. Mahe is the largest of the Seychelles islands and Victoria, the largest city, is the capital of the Republic of Seychelles. The international airport is here also along with the primary fishing port and most of the nation's industries.
In spite of its importance for politics, commerce and transportation, it is lightly-developed. Victoria is a small city and most of the island is dotted with small villages - this leaves most of the island to the glorious variety of green growth, rocky mountain peaks and creamy white sand beaches. Marsha says the sand is like cookie dough, both in colour and texture.
Mahe is the most beautiful of the islands we saw. There are so many fabulous beaches and so many mountain-road vistas (highest point is 900m/3000ft elevation) that there is always a new spectacular view just around the next bend in the road. We recommend you stay on Mahe as long as possible. We envy the Seychellois who grow up here - they see more beauty in their youth than the rest of us see in a lifetime..
