Daytrip by Ferry to Praslin Island - Rainbow & Sunset We took a daytrip to Praslin Island. The ferry ride was about an hour each way. The speedy boat had an open top deck from which we watched Mahe recede in our wake, becoming the tiny spot in the Indian Ocean that it really is. Praslin is smaller than Mahe, but is a popular tourist destination. We rented a car on the dock and drove to each of the recommended sights including Anse Lazio, a picturesque beach.
The Vallee de Mai is truely the Land that Time Forgot - towering coco de mer palms and other vestiges of the day the granite Seychelles islands left the continental shelf of India and started its lone migration westward. The canopy is dizzyingly high and the floor is covered with massive brown fronds and moss and there is almost nothing in between except the graceful trunk columns - we were reminded of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, a huge church in Barcelona.
We found our own favorite site in an out-of-the-way beach with a fascinating reef for us to snorkel, two explorers in the warm, clear aquamarine world of fish, coral and gorgonians.
The ferry ride home featured a rainbow over the neaby island of La Digue and a flaming sunset. A very special day.
